Happy Birthday India!

Loving elephants in Bali

Today is my baby’s birthday! India is the inspiration for many quilts because I pray she is soaking up the positive messages in my quilts.

Uniquely India, a memory quilt by O.V. Brantley for India Brantley.

Beyond that she is my road dog, my joy, my heartbeat. #ovsjoyousjanuary #joyandgratitude

Staycation!

Staycation, 11 x 8.5 inches, by O.V. Brantley, 2010.

Frozen and busted pipes at home were just the nudge I needed to take a staycation. Rather than sit home and worry about pipes, I opted to make lemonade out of lemons so I booked myself into a luxury hotel and decided to do Atlanta like a tourist.

African fabric at FIne Fabrics

I shopped for fabric at a huge fabric warehouse. They have a large African fabric collection.

Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta

I visited the Atlanta Civil Rights Museum. It was a moving and powerful experience that makes you think about your life has purpose.

Room service

And I enjoyed my luxurious accomodations, especially room service.

I was there ! At the Civil Rights Museum

Are you turning lemons into lemonade? How about scraps into a quilt? #ovsjoyousjanuary #giveyourselfflowers

Watch Night

Watch Night, 26×36 inch quilted wallhanging by O.V. Brantley 2016. For sale at ovbrantleyquilts.com

In the African American community, there is a tradition of going to church on New Year’s Eve. The congregation would sing and pray until midnight. It was called “watching the new year in”. The church in the center of this quilt made me think of this tradition.

My quilt Watch Night keeps that tradition alive. #december

My Quilt “I Love Strong Coffee” Finds a New Home

I Love Strong Coffee, 70×70 inch lap quilt by O.V. Brantley, 2012. SOLD!

Sometimes I am really sad to see a quilt go. I love all of my quilts, but I do have my favorites.  I Love Strong Coffee is a favorite quilt.

Closeup of “I Love Strong Coffee”

Alas, I sold it and it is gone to its new home. It was one of my favorites because I love neutrals, and I loved the simple message. I even loved the back of the quilt — hearts in neutral colors.

I know it is gone to a good home. Hopefully the new owner loves strong coffee too. #december

Bazaarly Big and Beautiful #4

Bazaarly Big and Beautiful #4 lap quilt by O.V. Brantley, 2017. For sale at ovbrantleyquilts.com

In preparation for my 9-day craft tour of Bali, I saw many pictures of colorful batik markets. The batik markets of Bali inspired this series of quilts. I wanted to randomly mix different prints to get a bazaar effect. Since I was experimenting and many of the fabrics had a large scale, I decided to make the blocks big. That’s how this series of quilts got its name.

Bazaarly Big and Beautiful #4 is a lap quilt that measures approximately 52×70 inches. It is comprised of 12 random 18 inch blocks in a mix of African and domestic prints. It is pieced on my machine and quilted on a long arm.

My Quilt “Be You” Finds a New Home

Be You, 36×36 inch art quilt by O.V. Brantley, 2014.

I enjoy gifting quilts, especially at Christmas. This year I gifted a quilt to each member of my management team at the DeKalb County Law Department.

My deputy Viviane Ernstes is the new owner of Be You.  I chose this quilt for her because she will be my successor. No matter how much you liked the old boss, I believe it is important for the new boss to put their own imprint on an organization. Although Viviane and I agreed on most things, I hope she will show up every day and just be Viviane.

Viviane has already told me that she loves the quilt, so I know it is gone to a good home. #joyandgratitude #dekalblaw #alifeofsimpleabundance #december

My Litigation Deputy Laura Johnson is the new owner of Circles of Deep Reflection. I chose this quilt for her because Laura is always very thoughtful in her legal analysis. She does not guess. She researches.

Laura has already told me that she loves it, so I know it is gone to a good home. #joyandgratitude #dekalblaw #alifeofsimpleabundance #december

My Quilt “Awesome African Elephants in My Garden #3” Finds a New Home

Awesome African Elephants in My Garden #3, 55×49 inch quilted wallhanging by O. V. Brantley, 2006.

I enjoy gifting quilts, especially at Christmas. This year I gifted a quilt to each member of my management team at the DeKalb County Law Department.

My office manager Lori Mosley is the new owner of Awesome African Elephants in My Garden #3. I chose this quilt for her because it had the word awesome in the title, and Lori is an awesome office manager. She handles everything efficiently with good judgment without being told what to do.

Lori has already told me that she loves it and has a special place to hang it, so I know it is gone to a good home. #joyandgratitude #dekalblaw #alifeofsimpleabundance #december
